Classifying T-Shirts Is Hard!
If you’ve browsed our online t-shirt store, you will have noticed that we’ve taken the time to classify t-shirts into different categories. Beyond actually designing cool and fun t-shirts, we reckon the hardest part about running this site is actually figuring out what category each t-shirt design goes into!
All that being said, we think it’s important that we at least try to put our t-shirts into some sort of classification system. After all, if you’re looking for a certain style of design, having everything in a category makes for easier browsing.
Nerdy t-shirt designs tend to be the easiest to classify. These usually have some sort of gaming or science reference to them. They’re easy! But they hard when they start to stray into the territory of more ironic t-shirt or t-shirts with a reference to a tv show or movie. These can be nerdy too!
Take our Flux Capacitor t-shirt, for example. It’s obvious what category this t-shirt should go into: it’s obviously a movie reference t-shirt. But (and it’s a bit but), it’s also pretty nerdy. Obviously we want to sell a lot of t-shirts (hence our name, A Lot of T-Shirts), but, more importantly we want our customers to be able to easily find the t-shirts that they would find interesting.
So we thought about it and put shirts like this in both categories. It’s a little annoying from an organisation point of view, but we think it’s better for customers. Do you agree or is it confusing?
Our Sports t-shirt is another example. This t-shirt obviously falls into the ironic t-shirts category. But it’s also kind of nerdy as well. Yeah, it’s a bit stereotypical but nerds aren’t always that into sports so a t-shirt that generically says “sports” on it probably suits the nerdier people amongst us. But it doesn’t really feel like it should be in nerdy.
Again, we just stuck this t-shirt design into both categories. Hopefully it makes it easier for people to find this t-shirt and they get a laugh out of it.
But then things get even more complicated if a t-shirt falls into more than two categories. We’re not going to get into examples here, but it’s something we prefer to avoid if possible. We are of the belief that we don’t want to just throw a bunch of t-shirts into categories with no thought. After all, the whole category thing is to help our customers find t-shirts more easily!
Then there’s out totally random t-shirts collection. This is kind of where we throw things if we’re not sure where to put them otherwise. Maybe there was an idea for a shirt but we don’t really have enough other ideas to make a full collection or category. Maybe it’s an idea we’re toying with that we’ll refine later. That’s the point of the totally random t-shirts.
Our collection of more random t-shirts is very much worth browsing. Certain designs may not be your style but hey, you may be surprised!
Anyway, browse away on all of our t-shirts. Even if we mis-categorise something, maybe you’ll find yourself pleasantly surprised.
